Yellow Springs Arts Council presents The Sunflower Show

The Sunflower Show
September 19th-October 11th
Reception September 27th 2-4 pm
We are throwing a joyous celebration of the sunflower field at Whitehall Farm!  This exhibition of paintings and photographs and mixed media is coordinated by Tecumseh Land Trust and will be hosted at The Yellow Springs Art Council Galley.

The show will be part of several other celebrations of TLT's 25th anniversary this year.
The Sunflower Show stemmed originally from one glorious day, full of sunflowers and many smiling people, of all ages, all painting in the sunflower fields. But it grew even bigger, for everyone loves the sunflowers.  TLT has since extended an invitation to the art community to make art , in any medium, inspired by sunflowers.
“In August of 2014 Tecumseh Land Trust hosted a "paint out" at Whitehall Farm  when the 10 acre sunflower field was in bloom.  The event that was open to the public."

"Sharon Neuhardt, who owns Whitehall Farm with her husband David, began planting sunflowers in their 10 acre field on Route 68 several years ago. Her motivation was simply to share these beautiful flowers with people in the area.  Her mission succeeded-people come from far and wide to photograph and paint the flowers.  Tecumseh Land Trust, with it's offices on Whitehall Farm, began a sunflower photo contest in 2012, that shares the beauty of the field even more broadly through their ever growing collection of photos."
"One way that TLT reaches out to the public is through arts, using writing, painting, and photography to capture the wonders of nature and through experiences of food and farm.  TLT is a non-profit membership organization that protects land in perpetuity with the help of volunteers and donors.  Cultivating the next generation of land stewards and leaders through education and outreach is essential to their mission."
Quotes are from Krista Magaw, Executive Director
For anyone who would like to try their hand at drawing sunflowers there will be a class offered by artist Jennifer Rosengarten

Coming in November 2015! Locked In: Team 2
We are doing it again! This time, we have 3 artists that applied as a team (last year, the artists met for the first time the day before they were locked in). Wonder what will happen?
3 Artists, locked in the gallery for 3 days, 3 boxes of ‘stuff’ donated from the community to use in an art installation, 3 tools they can each bring with them, and 3 phone calls among them to call for a friend to bring something for them to use in the piece. Plus one Camera Artist to capture it all.
During October, is your first chance to be part of the adventure. You get to supply the "stuff" for the artists to work with. On the first day of being locked in last year, the artists laid the “stuff” all out and it covered every inch of the floor. It was an amazing sight--art supplies, cans of leftover paint, toys, household things, pieces of wood, metal, building supplies, large pieces of material, yarn, string, and, oh my, the ands just keep coming.
So start plotting...what would you like to see the artists work with? There are 3 boxes waiting at the YSAC Gallery to hold your “stuff” for the Locked In Artists to use in November. The Gallery is open Wednesday–Sunday 1-4 (with the exception of October 14-16, while we hang a new show).
November 9th, 10th and 11th the artists will be locked in and creating like mad.  They'll need fuel!  You can be an integral part of the process by making breakfast, lunch or dinner for 3 and bringing it to them on one of the days.  It's a grand way to get a peek at what's going on and to be part of the creative energy that will be percolating.

The Holiday Art Jumble
Presented by the Yellow Springs Arts Council
A Grand Reshuffle of Yellow Springs Art
December 5th to January 3rd
(not open on Dec. 25th)
Location: YS Arts Council Gallery, 111 Corry Street, Yellow Springs, Ohio

The YSAC Holiday Art Jumble is coming back for it's 4rth year this December!
We invite you to donate anything fascinating, lovable, crafty or “arty” that you are ready to pass on or no longer have a place for.
We would love your Out-of-the-Closet, Under-the Bed, Boxed in the Basement or Stacked in the Garage Art. And that box of Grandma’s Arty Knickknacks wrapped in old newspaper or the Hand-Crafted Whimsy that is sitting in the dark, on the top shelf, would be greatly appreciated too.
We adore getting those Art Supplies that no longer inspire you, but will make another artist's eyes light up.  And the strange (you thought,) funky but cool, (he thought) lamp that your husband brought to your marriage 36 years ago that you've stashed in the dark, back room for years, it could be time for it to go to someone else who loves funky, cool things and will be totally charmed by it!
Drop off your “Art Treasure” donations from Wednesday to Sunday (1-4pm)
between November 14th -November 29th at the YSAC Gallery at 111 Corry Street.
Or call Nancy Mellon at 937-767-1366 to work out another time.
(So that we can keep restocking the Jumble, we will continue to accept donations during open gallery hours, through December 20th.)
Starting December 5th, enjoy the Holiday Art Jumble! You will find unique gifts at “can’t-resist” prices and you’ll be supporting the arts in Yellow Springs.
Sorry, we cannot accept used toys, clothing, kitchen appliances or books. (Of course, if the item is just plain screaming “This Is ART!”, we will gladly make an exception!)

“It's Still Life”
The Members Show
February 19th-March 13th

“Essentially, the subject matter of a still life painting or sculpture is anything that does not move or is dead.”
Quote from the Tate

An art of imitation?
A new way of seeing the ordinary objects that surround us?
When creating a still life, the important question to ask is, "What does it mean?"
Modern still life often breaks the two-dimensional barrier
and employs three-dimensional mixed media, and uses found objects, photography, computer graphics, as well as video and sound.”
 Work in any medium.

The first artwork submission is free to members!  There is a $10.00 entry fee for a second piece.
Work may be NFS or priced for sale (a 25% commission goes to YSAC on each sale)

Friday night was a great reception for the Members Show “It's Still Life”, thank you to all who came and celebrated with us!

There are 32 artists represented in the show and 45 pieces of art. The show will be up until March 13th. Please come and see it!

The Jurors for the Members Show Awards were:
    Patrick Mauk-General Manager of DVAC
Sherryl Kostic-Artist and Gallery Owner of “would you, could you, IN A FRAME”
Jason Morgan-Portrait and Still Life Painter Extraordinaire

We'd like to tell you a little about how the awards were chosen,
First to keep the artists anonymous, a temporary number was placed by each art piece, instead of a tag with name.
Our 3 wonderful jurors came to the gallery and spent a total of 6 hours looking at the work in this show and discussing it.

Then each individually chose 10 pieces to fill out a form on.
Each form has 4 questions and a number system of 1-5. Some of the jurors also wrote comments on the back.
The numbers were totaled from all 30 forms and double checked.
Lastly the identifying numbers were checked for the names of the artists.
The 4 Honorable Mention Certificate Winners are:

For her Oil On Wood piece “Memento Mori” Corrine Bayraktaroglu
For her Oil Painting “Matisse Homage” Christine Klinger
For his Pencil on Paper piece “Objects in a Crowded Space” Rajan Kose
For her Oil on Paper piece “My Favorite Blue”Jennifer Haack

The 3rd Place Winner for her Water Color “Transparent Fruit” is Angela Day
The Third Place Award included a hand crafted Ceramic Medal, a Certificate and a $50.00 Check sponsored by Althea Rozeboom.

The 2nd Place Winner for her Oil On Wood piece “Mr. Pickles Goes Hunting” is Corrine Bayraktaroglu

The Ceramic Award Medals for the Awards Ceremony were made by Dianne Collinson and Kaethi Seidl. The Award Certificates were created by Kathy Verner Moulton.

        How Do you Win?
The player that gets the most people to join Arts Council during March wins.  I'm playing, I want to win the Pot!  You can play too! Someone's going to win, can't wait to find out who!
        How does it work?
        It's easy:
        Ask people to join YSAC.
Tell people that the Arts Council's Membership Drive is a Game for all our members, and they can help you to win the Prize Pot!
Give out membership forms (Get them at the gallery, 111 Corry St. Wednesday-Sunday 1-4 or at at Unfinished Creations.  Put your name, in the corner, on them.)
Or tell people they can sign up online, at our web site- www.ysartscouncil.org   Ask them to fill in the “referred by” space with your name.

Winner will be announced at the beginning of April.
Tip: Look over our great web site, www.ysartscouncil.org to see what we offer- things like the online Artist Directory- which any artist can sign up for for free, or the AmazingPermanent Collection or the online Artist's Resource Directory (great for artists new to town,) or our Local Arts History Project (including a wiki that anyone can add local art history into,) fiscal opportunities for artist projects (you would not believe the number of art projects Arts Council has helped make happen over the years!), artist teaching opportunities, art class taking opportunities and space rental opportunities and even when needed, free shared space with art groups, for meetings and events.)
Tip: pick up some things to carry with you-to give to people you run in to- things like Holly Underwood's wonderful Membership Form and Brochure, the 2016 Season rack card or our new brochure (made by Stephen Rumbaugh) about the Permanent Collection. You can get these at the Gallery.

Why are we having this Membership Drive?  It's simple. To keep the Community Gallery Space open.  We are teetering on the edge, and need the support of many more members to survive. Every $30.00 membership can help.  All together, we can make wonderful art events happen and support our local artists.

Please consider joining and filling out this form today.

The Village of Yellow Springs shares a long and storied history with Japan, from the

days of welcoming and sponsoring families from internment camps, to Antioch College
Professor Earle Reynolds' assignment to the U.S. Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission in
Hiroshima after the war, (leading to the founding of the World Friendship Center in
Hiroshima), to Antioch College Professor Harold Wright’s establishment of the College’s exchange program with Kyoto Seika University. Reflecting this strong connection, Japanese is one of the three languages offered at Antioch College.

Ohayo Ohayo and The Kimono Project are generously supported by the Yellow Springs

Community Foundation, the Lloyd Family Fellowship and Antioch College alumnus Timothy Barrett '73.
