This is a show about whimsy and color and poetry and the growth of a deeply creative woman.
This show features Kathy’s 5 charming picture books but it could also be a show about Textile Art, Painting or Drawing.

Kathy has always loved storybooks, Walt Disney, coloring books and cartoons.  As a young woman, in amongst sewing and painting and drawing, she started creating stories.   Along the way she received from many people the gifts of encouragement and the knowledge of how to plan and plot a story.  More life and more years passed and more poems came into her head.  During these years she married, had children, did her art and learned how to be a draftsman, drawing house plans for local builders, using a computer and AutoCAD. She began to wonder about the possibility of painting on a computer.  As with so many of the arts she had mastered, Kathy just figured it out.

“I went back to the rhyme I had begun so long ago about shoes and socks. I worked and reworked
the poem and then planned and plotted my characters and drew my drawings. I scanned them
into my computer. Even though I wasn't even sure of what I was doing, I managed to paint
"You Have to Get All of Your Toes In"on my Mac.
I had figured out this wonderful way of painting, with endless colors and layers for characters and scenery.”

Kathy Verner Moulton is an artist, author and illustrator. Like everything else she has mastered, when she decided to publish her books, with the help of her husband, she taught herself how to self publish. So far she has written and illustrated and published five children’s books. She has also created over 60 images of Yellow Springs that are included in her published book, “My Town ~ the Muses of a Not So Vocal Local”. The work is hand drawn and/or drawn on computer and then painted digitally.

Born in Detroit, Michigan and then transplanted several times, she finally rooted in Yellow Springs and has lived there most of her life. Working in many areas of art, her focus lately has been on picture books.

It's always wonderful to see how others view our village, but their camera eye is often one of a visitor. Amy Hable, who lives and works in Yellow Springs, was inspired to start a hashtag #ysgram to promote a view of Yellow Springs from the perspective of someone who lives and/or works here.
So if you are taking images around town or want to find images remember #ysgram.

Senior Independence Monroe and Franklin Artist participants in the Greater Cincinnati Alzheimer's Association Memories in the Making® were thrilled to make poppies for the Yellow Springs "In Remembrance of the Children; Poppies for Peace."
Thank you artists, for contributing to this meaningful project. From left to right: Darryl, Ted, LC, Rick, Bonnie, Michelle (seated), Senior Independence; Franklin.
Each poppy made is unique to the maker as each child is unique. The artist participants spoke of love and peace while creating their poppies and many wrote such messages on their flower. It was, and is, a heartfelt expression of love and sorrow.
The opportunity for these artists to engage, create and be a part of a public art installation of such profound message is one that each values and treasures.
Thank you artists, for contributing to this valuable project

    Mary Ellen Croteau

    bottlecap mosaic art

I could just shut up. Show you pictures of her stunning artwork and let them speak for themselves.  But then you might not realize that they are all made out of plastic waste, the stuff that doesn’t get recycled.
Mary Ellen Croteau - Unconventional Mosaic Art
Mary Ellen Croteau, a Chicago based eco, feminist artist, is not averse to controversy.  For many years she has been an active Feminist Artist with an international reputation, producing witty, sophisticated art that shafts the status quo of our male dominated society.
    Plastic World
In recent years, she has developed a strong opinion about what we so easily throw into the landfill in our consumer society.  Ironically, she creates beautiful art out of waste to bring it to our attention.
“I conceived of an endless columnof these caps and jar lids, after Constantin Brancusi’s iconic modernist sculpture.  One became two, and two became many. While making these columns, I noticed the smaller caps tended to nest inside one another, and the color combinations reminded me of Chuck Close’s painted portraits.  So I got sidetracked and started on a large self-portrait (which I titled CLOSE) made entirely of bottle caps. “
At over 7000 plastic caps and measuring over 8’x7’ it’s an amazing piece, but a little big for our gallery.
The YSAC Gallery, will feature some of Mary Ellen’s smaller bottle cap pieces, including
My Eye, which at 30” x 38” is about 5 times the detail of the eye in her large self-portrait.

In her series Bag World, Mary Ellen explored the ubiquity of plastic bags in the environment.  The first project was the making of a braided bag rope with plastic bags that she accumulated over a 7-month period.   She titled that project: A Measure of Consumption: 225 days, 68 meters.

She has also painted replicas of works byVanGogh, O'Keeffe, Monet, deChiricoand Matisse, with plastic bags painted into the beautiful landscapes. Then in her installation, she made it impossible to get up close to the art except by wading through a foot high bag-strewn floor.
“I firmly believe in the power of the visual, and my work is my voice: a social critique and a visual challenge to all the cultural detritus we are force-fed every day.  My art is about looking at things in a slightly different way, and is intended to undermine the status quo with wit and humor. “

Come meet Mary Ellen Croteau at our Reception: October 17th 6-9 p.m.
The Yellow Springs Arts Council Community Gallery
111 Corry Street, Yellow Springs Ohio
Open hours at the gallery: Wednesday-Sunday 1-4

We searched. They applied. We checked each of their 3 references to see if they played nice.

Seven Gallery Committee Members juried for a whole day. One artist smoked and we thought no, that might be bad for the others, he can’t go out to smoke.  Sometimes the answer came down to “the other artists would have more fun creating with this artist.”
It was very painful to choose.  But we did. They are:

Ron Hundt from Kettering, Ohio-He’s the artist with the blue beard-Papa Smurf-He presented us with a box.  It held  “American Gothic Reimagined as Stick Figues”

Jennifer Bachelder from Westerville, Ohio-Her reference said  “Trash+Art+meeting and working with new artists=Jen” She holds trash parties for friends to create art.

Pierre Nagley from Yellow Springs, Ohio-He sent 6 pictures all totally different mediums- one was an 7 foot tall Bottle Cap Buddha

With Videographer Travis Hawkes from Glen Ellyn, Illinois-he shoots and edits videos for a living-we went to his web site, watched his videos-bingo, he’s in

On November 9ththey will meet each other for the first time and see the gallery but not what is in the boxes.  We will go over rules.  That evening they get pre interviews with Travis, the videographer .
The next morning they will be locked in.

Sketches from the Artist’s Nature Diary
     by Penelope S. Adamson
Opening Saturday, February 14, 2015:  All are invited to attend a special Valentine’s Day opening reception of Sketches from the Artist’s Nature Diary, a collection of original artwork by local artist Penelope S. Adamson. The opening, taking place on Saturday, February 14 from 4-7pm at the Emporium Wines and Underdog Café, will include Valentine’s themed hors d’oeuvers, live music, and wine. The collection embodies the simplicity, patterns, and subtlety found in the natural world through colored pencil and ink. The primary aspects of life weave throughout all of the pieces—bringing a moment of serenity to the viewer.

Most of the animals and plants in the show, which runs through April 5, are native to our dear Glen Helen and include owls, herons, Sycamore, fox, deer, and more. According to Penelope, “Creating art is a big part of my life—it’s my way of appreciating the world. Through this show, I’m hoping to convey how beautiful life is in the quiet of our own backyards.”

Penelope began drawing before she could talk and began studying art by way of scholarships for gifted children at the Springfield Museum of Art at age six. Since then, she continued studying art throughout school and worked as an illustrator for a time after graduating. This is Penelope’s seventh art show in Yellow Springs.

For a show preview, visit Facebook.com/PenelopeS.Adamson. Those wishing to purchase a piece, a print, and/or to order a commission may reach Penelope at 937-319-8088 or by finding her on Facebook.

    presents
My husband bought me an iphone last year and I went bonkers taking pictures and decided to join Instagram. I was astonished at the amount of amazing photography, and was delighted to see so many of Yellow Springs. Instagram is a social media platform with
black and white photo of mannequin
300 million members sharing images from around the world. As the company describes it Instagram is a place that is "home for visual storytelling" and this is certainly true of our exhibit.

For those unfamiliar with hashtag # it "functions as a beacon in order for users to find images of interest." Thanks go to Amy Hable for coming up with the ysgram hashtag so viewers/locals could group and see all the Yellow Springs images in one place.

Amy Hable - I practiced photography as a child and teenager, with a film camera, focusing on black and white and what I could do with that in the darkroom. Camera eventually broke and I had to stop. Found some joy working in one hour photo labs and at Life Touch. Bought an iPhone a year ago and discovered I could take pictures and edit in a whole new way. No plans on stopping. You can contact Amy at:
